In a bizarre incident, a young man arrived at a police station in Kerala’s Thrissur district in the wee hours of Sunday and claimed the bag which he was carrying contained skeletal remains of two newborn babies.

The man, who was in an inebriated state, told the cops at Pudukkad station that the babies were born from his relationship with a woman. Both infants had died and been buried at separate times and locations over the past four years, he reportedly said.

Police have taken the man and his alleged girlfriend—both are natives of Vellikulangara—into custody. An investigation has been launched to ascertain his claims and to verify whether it was a case of human sacrifice.

"A man turned up at the station around 12.30 am saying the bag had the remains of two babies. He said one child died four years ago, the other two years ago. We are verifying his claims and treating the case as a possible homicide at this stage," an officer said.

The man told police that one baby was buried at a public cremation ground while the other on private land. Investigators, along with forensic experts and a medical team, will visit these places.

According to local media reports, the woman told police that both the babies died soon after their birth.

The investigators are likely to question the relatives of the couple and probe the possible superstition angle in the case. It is suspected that the couple collected and kept the bones of the babies to ward off evil spirits.
