Pune Civic Polls: Ward Formation Work Begins, Number Of Wards Likely To Increase Due To Newly-Merged Villages
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) clarified that work on the ward formation process for the upcoming municipal elections has begun at a preliminary level, with a review of census and population data.
However, the Corporation has warned citizens against believing rumors or misleading news circulated by some political representatives.
The PMC stated that EB mapping and detailed ward structuring work has not started yet, and that citizens should refer only to official announcements and the PMC website (www.pmc.gov.in) for updates.
The delimitation process of areas under PMC, as mandated by the Supreme Court's directives, has not gathered any pace. Civic officials said it is complex, as it involves the old city areas and 34 merged villages, of which two have been demerged.
Wards to increase
The administration is preparing the infrastructure and manpower needed to complete the delimitation on time. The delimitation process involves recasting electoral boundaries for fair representation and equal voter weight so that each constituency has roughly the same number of voters, according to the Election Commission of India.
The formation of new wards will include the newly merged areas. The number of wards will most likely increase, but the exact number can only be decided after the State Election Commission's directives.
