Heavy Rain Alert: After the arrival of monsoon in almost all parts of the country, heavy rains are occurring in many areas. Rains accompanied by thunderstorms in Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, West Uttar Pradesh and Haryana have given relief to the people from the heat. But in states like Himachal Pradesh and Assam, rain has become a disaster. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘red alert’ in many states, predicting that the rain will continue throughout this week.

Meanwhile, the 24-hour ban on the Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand due to rain has now been lifted. The holy journey has started once again after the weather improved. Delhi and surrounding National Capital Region (NCR) witnessed light to moderate rains with thunderstorms and strong winds on Monday morning. This brought down the temperature by several degrees Celsius and improved the air quality.

The IMD said that many areas of Delhi-NCR received rain on Sunday night and Monday morning. Delhi’s Safdarjung recorded 14 mm of rain in the last 24 hours till 8.30 am on Monday. While Palam received 16.2 mm of rain and Lodhi Road received 17.3 mm of rain during the same period.

According to the three-hour rainfall data of the Meteorological Department, Najafgarh received the highest rainfall of 5.5 mm between 2.30 am on Sunday and 5.30 am on Monday. This was followed by Safdarjung with 4.4 mm and Palam, Pusa and Narela with 1 mm each.

According to the IMD, the day temperature on Monday dropped significantly due to the rain. The minimum temperature at Safdarjung station was recorded at 24 degrees Celsius at 8.30 am on Monday, which is 3.9 degrees below the season’s average.

‘Yellow alert’ issued

There has been a slight improvement in the air quality. However, the Air Quality Index (AQI) still remained in the ‘satisfactory’ category. The AQI was recorded at 73 at 9 am on Monday. Whereas it was 83 on Sunday evening. The IMD had issued a warning for Monday morning. It predicted light rain and strong winds with a speed of 30-40 kmph in all four zones of Delhi (north-west, north-east, south-west and south-east). Similar conditions were expected in parts of NCR including Ghaziabad, Noida, Gurgaon and Faridabad.

The Meteorological Department has issued a ‘yellow alert’ for most parts of Delhi and NCR. While some parts like North-West Delhi and parts of NCR like Jhajjar, Bhiwani and Panipat are in the ‘green zone’. According to IMD officials, light to moderate rain is expected in some parts of the region in the next 24 hours. They have also advised residents to avoid going to open places during the thunderstorm.

Rain in many parts of Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana

Apart from Delhi, many parts of Punjab and Haryana and Chandigarh received rain on Monday. According to the local Meteorological Department, Chandigarh received 70.5 mm of rain in the last 24 hours till 8.30 am on Monday. Rain occurred in Yamunanagar, Hisar, Ambala, Rohtak, Bhiwani, Sirsa, Panchkula and Karnal in Haryana. A farmer in Yamunanagar district said that his fields were submerged due to heavy rains.

Heavy rains occurred in many places of Punjab including Ludhiana, Patiala, Pathankot, Bathinda, Mohali, Gurdaspur and Ferozepur. Temperatures dropped below normal after heavy rains in the region. Rains are expected in many parts of both the states till Tuesday.

Red alert issued in Himachal, schools closed

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has directed the Deputy Commissioners of Kangra, Mandi, Sirmaur and Solan districts to keep schools closed on June 30 in view of the red alert. The Meteorological Department said in a revised warning issued on Sunday evening, “Heavy to very heavy rain is expected at some places in Kangra, Mandi, Solan and Sirmaur districts till Monday evening. Heavy rain is expected at isolated places in Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur and Shimla districts and at isolated places in Kullu and Chamba districts.”

Sukhu has directed the Deputy Commissioners of Kangra, Mandi, Sirmaur and Solan to keep schools closed on Monday to ensure the safety of students. Following the chief minister’s directions, Mandi Deputy Commissioner Apurv Devgan declared a holiday for all government and private institutions in the district except IIT-Mandi, Lal Bahadur Shastri Government Medical College and Hospital and other medical institutions due to the potential threat of landslides, uprooting of trees, flash floods and road blockages.

Kangra Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa also declared a holiday for all educational institutions in the district except residential institutions. The Shimla Meteorological Centre on Sunday issued a ‘red alert’ for heavy rain in 10 districts of Himachal Pradesh. Meanwhile, services on the Shimla-Kalka rail line remained suspended for hours till debris and trees fallen on the tracks following overnight rains were cleared.

3 dead

Three people died in rain-related incidents in the last 24 hours. With this, the death toll in the state since the onset of monsoon rose to 20. The State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) said that one person each drowned in Una and Bilaspur districts. While one person died after falling from a height in Shimla district.

A landslide near Koti on the Shimla-Kalka National Highway (NH-5) connecting Shimla and Chandigarh damaged some parts of the road. This affected the traffic. Solan Superintendent of Police (SP) Gaurav Singh said on Sunday that traffic has been restored near Chakki Mor on NH 5 damaged due to landslide.

A red alert for heavy rain has been issued for 10 out of the 12 districts of the state – Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, Una, Kullu and Chamba on June 29. Heavy rains had caused huge damage in the state in the year 2023, when the Meteorological Department had issued a red alert in the months of July and August. More than 550 people had died in the worst ever monsoon disaster in Himachal Pradesh.
