'Tanvi the Great' trailer: Anupam Kher’s new film showcases a young autistic woman determined to fulfill a promise against all odds

The trailer of Anupam Kher’s new directorial venture Tanvi the Great has finally dropped! The actor had taken to Instagram to share the trailer of his film, with the caption, “In a world that saw her through a different lens, she kept shining with a light that could not be unseen. Her smile awakens hope, her heart builds courage, and her journey inspires us all. And now, she is here to meet you all. She is #TanviTheGreat.”

The film has garnered attention through its international film festival screenings, including the Cannes and the New York Indian Film Festivals, the attendance of Robert de Niro at the film's premiere in the latter and the standing ovation received for the screenings at both Houston and Austin.

Tanvi the Great showcases Shubhangi Dutta in her debut role as the titular Tanvi Raina, a young autistic woman who is determined to join the Army, to fulfill her late father’s dream of saluting the Indian flag at the Siachen Glacier. It navigates the various challenges she has to face when she shows up at the Lansdowne Cantonment to try out for the military. Despite the fact that individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) cannot qualify for the Army, she is encouraged to train with aspiring soldiers, overcoming challenges and the cynicism of her grandfather.

The three-minute trailer delves into Tanvi’s everyday life, the strained relationship she shares with her grandfather (played by Anupam Kher), and the various challenges she has to face while trying to honor her father’s memory. “I’m different, but no less,” she says, speaking of her capabilities. The trailer ends with Tanvi finally getting to climb Mount Everest, as a group of soldiers hoist the Indian flag at the peak. The film promises an endearing and inspiring journey of an exuberant young woman, who will not let anyone or anything get in the way of what she truly desires.

“Tanvi is not just a character—she is a movement. This film is my salute to every child who dares to dream differently. It is not about disability—it is about unshakeable courage and quiet power,” Kher had said to PTI in an interview.

The film marks Kher’s return to direction 23 years after the release of his directorial debut, the 2002 film Om Jai Jagdish. It also stars Iain Glen, Boman Irani, Jackie Shroff, Arvind Swami, Nasser and Pallavi Joshi in prominent roles, and features a soundtrack penned by lyricist Kausar Munir, and Oscar-winning composer M.M. Keeravani.

Tanvi the Great releases in cinemas on 18th July, 2025.
