Shimla MC prohibits construction work in town amid heavy rain
Taking precautionary measures to avoid any major disaster with the onset of monsoon season, the Municipal Corporation, Shimla, has ordered to prohibit all types of construction-related works within its jurisdiction with immediate effect till further notice.
As per the official order issued here today by Bhupinder Attri, Municipal Commissioner, Shimla, it has been mentioned, “In view of the recurring incidents of landslides, uprooting of trees, and structural damages caused by unscientific earth cutting and excavation during the monsoon season, all excavation, earth-cutting, and related construction activities within the jurisdiction of Shimla Municipal Corporation are strictly prohibited during the monsoon period.”
“This measure has been deemed necessary to ensure public safety, environmental protection, and the structural integrity of surrounding areas. Any individual, agency, or entity found violating this order shall be held solely responsible for any consequential loss or damage to life and property” stated the Commissioner in the order.
Surinder Chauhan, Mayor, Municipal Corporation, Shimla said that every year, the corporation directs to prohibit construction work during the monsoon season to ensure that no damage occurs to the buildings and other areas of the town. “Unscientific cutting poses danger not only to the environment but also to other adjoining buildings which could further lead to greater damage in case of torrential rains, as seen in 2023. In order to avoid such occurrence it is very necessary to avoid construction works during the monsoon season, therefore, it has been decided to prohibit construction work in the town till further orders, to ensure the safety of the people” he said.
The town has been receiving heavy rainfall for the past few days, due to which it has witnessed several landslides, uprooting of trees as well as collapse of one multi-storeyed building.
