Karnal MC cracks down on water, sewerage bill defaulters

The Karnal Municipal Corporation (KMC) has started action against defaulters of water supply and sewerage bills. In this series, 81 consumers with outstanding dues of over Rs 1 lakh each have been issued notices and given a one-week deadline to clear their dues. The total outstanding amount from these consumers stands at Rs 1.37 crore, said Dr Vaishali Sharma, Commissioner KMC.

Sharma said despite repeated bill issuances, these residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional consumers failed to pay their dues. “We are now issuing final notices. If payment is not made within the stipulated time, both water supply and sewerage connections will be disconnected,” she warned.

Besides, notices are also being prepared for consumers with dues above Rs 50,000 and will be issued shortly. Sharma said the bills worth Rs 4.10 crore were issued between January and December 2024, of which about Rs 2 crore has already been recovered. She expressed confidence that the Municipal Corporation would achieve its collection target.

She said residents could pay their dues through various convenient modes, including cash payment at Citizen Facilitation Centre (CFC) of the MC, barcode scanning on the bill for instant digital payment, online payment via online.ulbharyana.gov.in using debit or credit cards. She also said the payment process was user-friendly and urged citizens to avoid last-minute delays.

The Commissioner said alongside tackling defaulters, the MC had also launched a crackdown on illegal water and sewerage connections. Over 2,000 notices have already been issued to people found using unauthorised connections. The remaining notices are being dispatched.

Sharma cautioned, “Citizens using illegal connections must regularise these within a week, or else the connections will be disconnected by the enforcement team.”

To legalise a connection, the citizens must visit the Municipal Office from Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm, and submit the required documents, including property registry, Aadhar card of property owner, passport-size photograph, copy of neighbour’s water and sewerage bill, property tax bill, family ID, an affidavit along with the required fee. Those who have taken connections but not yet installed meters are also advised to get these installed immediately to ensure billing based on meter readings.
