Attack on medical students, doctors demand tough action
aculty members and intern doctors of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Government Medical College, Chamba, on Monday staged a protest against the attack on MBBS trainees by some miscreants and demanded a tough action against the accused.
Six medical students were attacked at the old bus stand by some local youths on Saturday night. The assault, reportedly carried out with sharp weapons, left one intern critically injured and five others with minor injuries.
In protest, the enraged interns, supported by the entire medical fraternity, marched to the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Monday, demanding immediate arrests and stringent action against the culprits.
Senior faculty members, including principal Pankaj Gupta, Pradeep, Rohit, Ashwini and Dilbagh, joined the protest in solidarity with the students. SP Abhishek Yadav reached the site and held discussions with the protestors and faculty members. He assured them that the police had already initiated action and those strict legal measures would be taken against all those involved.
Principal Gupta said he had formally demanded the establishment of a permanent police outpost within the college campus to ensure the safety of students and staff. “A secure atmosphere is essential for both education and medical services. This incident has raised serious concerns about law and order in Chamba,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Faculty Association has also condemned the attack on students. Association president Manik Sehgal said the assault on medical students in the heart of the town was deeply disturbing and absolutely unacceptable. “It has created a climate of fear among students who are training to serve the society in the future. We strongly demand the immediate non-bailable arrest of all assailants and their prosecution under attempted murder charges,” he said.
Sehgal also demand enhanced security around and within the medical college campus. “We are closely monitoring the developments and urge the authorities to act without delay,” said Sehgal.
Meanwhile, DC Mukesh Repaswal and SP Abhishek Yadav have both assured the protesting doctors that no guilty individual would be spared and adequate steps would be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
