With the aim of streamlining traffic and reducing road accidents, the Municipal Corporation (MC), Ludhiana, in collaboration with the Punjab Road Safety and Traffic Research Centre, conducted a road safety assessment of Ludhiana city.

Mayor Principal Inderjit Kaur, on Monday, launched the ‘Road Safety Assessment Report of Ludhiana City’, which includes a detailed analysis aimed at improving various junctions and road infrastructure to ensure the safety of residents. The report highlights key insights into traffic accidents and safety measures in the city.

MC Joint Commissioner Ankur Mahindroo, Executive Engineer Manjitinder Singh Johal, and Road Traffic Experts (RTE) Suraj Chhabra, Parminder Singh and Ajayveer Singh were also present at the launch ceremony.

The officials stated that, working under the directions of MC Commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal, the civic body had hired the services of the Punjab Road Safety and Traffic Research Centre, headed by Traffic Advisor to Punjab, Navdeep Asija, for the assessment last year.

Mayor Principal Inderjit Kaur stated that, alongside the assessment, steps are also being taken to redesign junctions and roads to enhance safety at the ground level. In the report, experts have identified 12 black spots in the city and measures are already underway to address these locations.

According to the findings, road crashes in Ludhiana have reduced by 6.25 per cent in 2024 compared to 2023, indicating early signs of a positive impact from various road safety initiatives. This improvement is attributed to consistent efforts over the past year in traffic management and road safety by the civic body, in collaboration with road traffic experts.

Mayor Inderjit Kaur further stated that the guidelines of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India, have also been incorporated and the civic body is taking serious steps to improve traffic management in the city. Measures are also being implemented to reduce congestion on city roads.
