Beas River Floods In Mandi, Himachal Pradesh; IMD Issues Red Alert After Heavy Rain

Torrential rain has unleashed severe flooding in Himachal Pradesh’s Beas River, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for the region. With weather conditions rapidly deteriorating, authorities are bracing for more intense downpours and a heightened risk of landslides and flash floods.

According to the IMD, the state has witnessed widespread rainfall over the past 24 hours, with several areas receiving heavy to very heavy precipitation. Palampur recorded the highest rainfall at 76 mm, closely followed by Banjar with 75 mm and Sirmaur with 55 mm.

"Almost all areas in the state have seen rain," said Sandeep Kumar Sharma, Senior Scientist at the IMD’s Shimla Centre. “People are strongly advised to stay away from rivers and streams as the threat of landslides remains significant.”

What’s Ahead: Rain to Ease Briefly, Then Return Stronger

While some temporary relief was expected on June 28, forecasters warned that the intensity would likely pick up again by June 29 and 30, especially in mid-hill and higher-altitude regions. An orange alert was issued earlier for the latter half of the week, highlighting risks of flooding and landslides in several districts.

Sharma confirmed that heavy rain is expected to resume, with districts like Una, Bilaspur, Solan, Shimla, and Sirmaur placed under a heightened warning. The forecast also indicates significant rainfall in Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla, which could further aggravate the flood situation.

District-by-District Forecast

The IMD has outlined varying degrees of rainfall across the state:

  • Bilaspur, Solan, Shimla, Sirmaur, Hamirpur, Mandi, and Kangra: Light to moderate showers, with isolated spells of intense to very intense rain.
  • Kullu, Una, and Chamba: Light to moderate rainfall expected.
  • Kinnaur, Lahaul, and Spiti: Isolated light rainfall likely over the next few hours.

To keep the public informed, the IMD has been regularly updating local agencies and the State Disaster Management Authority through SMS alerts and official bulletins.

Public Advisory: Stay Cautious, Stay Safe

In light of the ongoing weather emergency, officials have issued a strong advisory to residents and tourists, especially those in low-lying or hilly areas. People are urged to avoid venturing near rivers, steep slopes, and unstable terrain, as landslides and flash floods remain a serious risk during this period.

As the monsoon gains momentum, Himachal Pradesh is facing one of its most challenging weather phases this season. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with disaster response teams on standby to tackle any emergencies.
