The Dalai Lama is also referred to as 'rgyal-ba' which means 'precious conqueror'. He is also called 'kundan', which means 'the presence'.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama's spiritual name is Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso.
At the age of two, Tenzin Gyatso was recognised as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama.
He received traditional Tibetan education in Lhasa, including subjects like Buddhism, logic, and philosophy, under the guidance of many scholars.
After the death of the 13th Dalai Lama in 1950, he officially assumed full political power as the leader of Tibet at the age of 15.
In 1959, after the Chinese military entered Tibet, the Dalai Lama was forced to flee to India. He established the Tibetan Government-in-Exile in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh.
