'The Devil Wears Prada 2' is officially in production: Original cast members expected to return

19 years after the first film, the sequel to the iconic The Devil Wears Prada is officially in production! The announcement released on Instagram by 20th Century Studios confirmed the news through a teaser of two devilish red pumps.
The original cast comprising Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci are expected to return for the sequel, along with Kenneth Branagh who joins the cast as Priestly’s husband.
Set in the world of fashion glamour, the first film, based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel of the same name follows aspiring journalist Andrea “Andy” Sachs, played by Anne Hathaway, who is hired as an assistant to the difficult and demanding Miranda Priestly, editor-in-chief to the glossy fashion magazine Runway. Priestly is loosely based on the editor-in-chief of Vogue, Anna Wintour, under whom Weisberger briefly worked as an assistant. The announcement of the sequel comes just days after Wintour has decided to step down from her position after 37 years. Released in 2006, the film was critically acclaimed for its writing and stellar performances. Over the years, it has cemented an iconic cult-status for itself, and has had a lasting impact on popular culture.
Though the plot details of the sequel are yet to be disclosed, it is expected to be centered on Miranda Priestly navigating her career amidst the decline of the traditional publishing industry. This time she faces off against Blunt’s character Emily, her previous assistant-turned-high-powered executive for a luxury group with advertising funds that Priestly desperately needs. It is unclear how Hathaway’s Andy Sachs factors into the story, as her character had quit her job as Priestly’s assistant and taken up a job in a newspaper agency by the end of the first film.
David Frankel and Aline Brosh McKenna, who directed and wrote the original film, will be returning for the sequel alongside producer Karen Rosenfelt.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 drops May 1, 2026.
