President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated Uttar Pradesh’s first AYUSH university in Gorakhphur on Tuesday and termed it a ‘milestone’ for the entire country.

Murmu expressed hope that the university will be recognised across the world.

The President stressed that the university must conduct research that meets international standards so that holistic healing—which is the hallmark of India—and the world’s traditional healing systems are bolstered.

Drawing a parallel between public representatives and those who will serve at the university, she said that both had to promise themselves that they would serve without tiring. While the government could build institutions, it was up to the people to make them viable. “You will have to promise yourselves that you will be tireless’, she said.

She also said that, unlike allopathic medicines which come with an expiry date, traditional medicines have no such 'use-by' dates and this was a testament to their scientific strength.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minster Yogi Adityanath said that the university would also become a focal point for medical tourism in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision. He also said that all six commissioners of the state will have one such college soon. At the district level, health and wellness centres with a minimum capacity of 100 beds will be made operational either by the government or in PPP mode. This will also create income opportunities for farmers as medicinal plants will be required for such centres and colleges.

Governor Anandiben Patel said that it was her wish that homoeopathy and naturopathy should be promoted as much as allopathy. At Lucknow’s Governor House, Patel said, the number of those who sought homeopathic medicines was far below those who sought allopathic treatment. The Governor said she herself had asked doctors to direct patients to naturopathy and called upon public representatives to propagate the use of traditional medicinal systems—and this she said would half the state’s health budget.

The Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath AYUSH University spread around 52 hectares will disseminate and advance knowledge in Ayurveda, Unani, Homeopathy, Yoga and naturopathy, Siddha and Sowa-rigpa, Nursing, Pharmacy, Paramedical Science and other disciplines. It will carry out teaching, training and research. The admission process to the university has also kicked off today. All institutes in the area which offer courses in traditional medicine systems will be affiliated to the university.
