Berhampur Police Arrest Accused in Minor Girl Rape Case

Berhampur: In a significant development, the Berhampur Police have arrested the accused in connection with the rape of a minor girl under the jurisdiction of Golanthara PS in Ganjam district.

The accused has been identified as 22-year-old Bhubana Pradhan.

The incident occurred on June 28, 2025, when the victim’s parents, daily wage workers, left their three children, including the minor victim, at home to go to work. Around 11:00 AM, the 11-year-old girl went to the backyard of her aunt’s house to pick guavas.

The accused, Bhubana Pradhan, a cousin of the victim from the same village, allegedly lured her to a nearby school’s latrine room and sexually assaulted her.

A co-villager, Bhagaban Pradhan, intervened after hearing the victim’s screams, causing the accused to flee.

The victim later informed her parents, who filed a complaint with the Golanthara Police Station on June 30, leading to the swift arrest of the accused.

The medical examination of the minor survivor has been completed and produced before CWC for her counselling. The accused has been arrested and forwarded to court today, informed Berhampur SP Dr. Saravana Vivek M.

The investigation of the case is in progress, he added.

The incident, which took place days after the shocking Gopalpur gang-rape case, has raised serious concerns about child safety in the region.
