The three accused in the Kolkata gang-rape case have been suspended from South Calcutta Law College. The main accused, Manojit Mishra, a Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad leader, was a temporary teaching staff at the college. The two other accused, who were students, have been banned from admissions. The decision was taken unanimously by the college committee, which includes principal Naina Chatterjee, on Tuesday.

The main accused has been working as a temporary teaching staff from 2024, according to sources who spoke to Anandabazar Patrika. The management committee of the college has decided that the money taken by the main accused for the job must be returned to the college.

One of the committee members, Haripada Banik, said, "There were various complaints against the main accused, which were reported to the police. But no action was taken against him. And I cannot say how he got the job. Complaints were coming from within the college since he joined the job, he started a threat culture in the college."

Mishra was also arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer and vandalising a police vehicle in April 2025 after he was confronted for trying to enter an ATM while holding a lit cigarette. Mishra also has a history of sexual assault charges against him at multiple police stations. His batch mates had described him as a perpetual troublemaker who harassed girls inside the college, a PTI report said.

The law college has offered to bear the expenses of the victim’s treatment and are considering amping up CCTV surveillance.

A student at the Calcutta Law College was raped by a former student and two seniors at the college campus. The accused have all been associated to the Trinamool Congress student council. According to the victim’s statement, the main accused proposed marriage to her. When she rejected and tried to leave, she was dragged back into the college and taken to the guard’s room where the rape happened.
