According to the Economic Times report, despite the announcement of withdrawing these notes from circulation on 19 May 2023, even after two years, 2 thousand notes worth Rs 6,099 crore are still present in the market. This information has come to light on the basis of the latest data of RBI, which reflects the situation till 30 June 2025.

Announced to remove from circulation in May 2023

Let us tell you that RBI had decided to remove Rs 2,000 notes from circulation in May 2023. At that time, 2 thousand notes worth Rs 3.56 lakh crore were present in the market. The facility to deposit or exchange these notes was initially available in all banks till 7 October 2023. After this, from 9 October 2023, people can also deposit these notes in their bank accounts in the issue office of RBI.

98.29 percent notes returned

According to RBI data, 98.29 percent of the notes have been returned by 30 June 2025, yet, notes worth Rs 6,099 crore are still with the people. Let us tell you that Rs 2,000 notes were introduced after the 2016 demonetization. According to RBI, these notes were being used for big transactions or to hide money. Therefore, it was decided to remove them from circulation under the clean note policy.

Still legal tender

RBI has clarified that Rs 2,000 notes will still remain legal tender. This means that if you have these notes, you can deposit them in banks or exchange them in RBI’s regional offices. You can deposit these notes in 19 issue offices of RBI.

You can also send notes to the post office
