Who is Rohiqa Cyrus Mistry?

Rohiqa Cyrus Mistry, the wife of the late Cyrus Mistry, is one of India’s wealthiest women after a string of devastating familial losses. The husband of Rohiqa, Cyrus Mistry, the younger son of construction titan Pallonji Mistry, died in a car accident in September 2022 at the age of 54, and only weeks after Pallonji Mistry, Cyrus’s father, passed away in June that year.

Rohiqa Mistry, one of the richest women in India, has a unique connection with the Tata group

Following the unexpected death of her husband, Rohiqa Mistry acquired his substantial ownership of the family businesses, including a major share in Tata Sons, the holding company for the Tata Group. Forbes reported that Rohiqa is now the second-richest woman in India with a net worth estimated at USD 9.3 billion (₨ 77,000 crore). Rohiqa joins only two other Indian women in the billionaire club as of 2023. The richest woman in India, Savitri Jindal, has an estimated wealth of USD 17 billion.

Rohiqa Mistry’s family background

Cyrus Mistry, Rohiqa’s late husband, was a known name in Indian business. He was the Chairman of Tata Sons, in office from 2012 until his removal in October 2016. He was appointed by celebrated industrialist and philanthropist Ratan Tata.

Rohiqa Mistry and her connection with Noel Tata, Ratan Tata

Rohiqa is linked to Noel Tata, with his wife Aloo Mistry being Cyrus Mistry’s sister. Despite his removal from the position of chairman, the Mistry family still holds 18.4% in Tata Sons through the Shapoorji Pallonji Group, which is one of the largest shareholders in Tata. This stake represents the most valuable asset of the Mistry family.

Once Mistry was removed, the relationship with the Tata Sons soured; court battles and disputes over control followed. The Mistry family still has plenty of skin in the game with Tata Group because they retained a significant stake in Tata Sons.

It is to be noted that Noel Tata is Ratan Tata’s half-brother. Noel is married to Aloo Mistry, making him the brother-in-law of the late Cyrus Mistry. Regardless of their struggles, the Mistry family has retained a strong presence in the Tata Group’s governance. Rohiqa B. and Cyrus were married for over three decades and had two sons, Zahan and Firoz Mistry. Rohiqa B.’s family has an illustrious legal history: her brother, Riyaz Chagla, was appointed judge of the Bombay High Court in 2017, and her grandfather, MC Chagla, was a prominent legal figure and the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court before he joined the cabinet of the Congress Government as a cabinet minister.
