Bengaluru Rural Renamed Bengaluru North; Bagepalli To Now Be Called Bhagyanagara: CM Siddaramaiah

In a key administrative move, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday announced that Bengaluru Rural district will now be officially known as Bengaluru North district. Alongside this, the town of Bagepalli has been renamed Bhagyanagara, as part of the state government's efforts to reflect historical and cultural identities in place names.

"We are going to name Bengaluru City University after the late Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh. We have named it Dr. Manmohan Singh University," Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah told ANI.

Karnataka Cabinet Meet Highlights

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday announced that the Karnataka cabinet has cleared 48 key proposals amounting to Rs 3,400 crore with major allocations directed toward drinking water infrastructure and educational initiatives for marginalized communities.

Addressing the media after the cabinet meeting, Siddaramaiah dismissed opposition claims about a financial crunch in the state. "BJP repeatedly that this government has no money. I am pressing it...The total revised amount for the Yettinahole project is Rs 23,251 crores, the amount spent so far is Rs 17,147 crores, another 6,103 crores will be spent. This is basically a drinking water project, but we will fill 50% of the lakes...First, the drinking water project should be completed," he said, as per the agency report. 

The Chief Minister also provided an update on water supply efforts in districts like Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Bengaluru Rural, and Hassan. "There is no problem with drinking water, the opposition asks where the water is. Gravity Main Canal is also 82-85% complete. Rs 9807 crores have been spent," he said.

In a significant move toward improving access to education for underprivileged groups, Siddaramaiah said the Labour Department will establish one residential school for workers' children in every district. “Rs 1175.25 crores have been sanctioned for its construction, wherever there is a large number of workers. We have allocated Rs 10 crores for the construction of two residential schools to train backward candidates for competitive examinations, including UPSC," he said.
