Yashaswi Jaiswal needs 10 runs to break Dravid and Sehwag's record at Birmingham | India vs England Live scorecard

It took Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag 25 Tests and 40 innings each to breach the 2000-run mark. While Dravid managed the record  26 years ago, Viru repeated the feat five years later in 2004.

Playing his 20th Test (38 innings) in Birmingham, Yashaswi Jaiswal needed 10 more runs to break the record and rewrite the history books.

The 23-year-old left-handed opener needed 97 runs against England in the first innings to better Dravid and Sehwag's milestone. However, he got out for 87—ten runs short—post lunch. English Captain Ben Stokes bowled one wider on the crease from around the stumps, serving a gentle half-volley wide outside off stump. Jaiswal, with a tired extension of the arms, threw his bat at it, only to catch the outside edge and reach Jamie Smith's gloves.

Jaiswal now has to score 10 runs in the second innings of the match to enter the history books. Taking one more innings could see him becoming the third joint record holder alongside his former coach and Sehwag.

For those wondering, 'Master Blaster' Sachin Tendulkar was 20 years and 10 months when he crossed the 2000-run mark in the game's longest format. However, he had played 39 Tests by the time he reached the mark. Sunil Gavaskar, meanwhile, was 27 years old when he managed 2000 runs in the format after 23 Tests.

It was against New Zealand in Hamilton that 'The Wall' went past the milestone, while Sehwag's opponent was Australia in Chennai, data showed.
