UK’s lethal F-35B fighter jet stranded in Kerala for 19 days to be airlifted by…
What began last month as an emergency landing by a British Royal Navy F-35B Lightning fighter jet at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport has unexpectedly turned into a marketing gift for Kerala Tourism.
According to latest reports, with field repair attempts yet to succeed, the United Kingdom is now exploring the option of airlifting the jet aboard a C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft.
The jet, worth over USD 110 million and known to be one of the most advanced fighter aircraft in the world, made an emergency landing at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport on 14 June.
It remains grounded at the airport, awaiting repairs after developing a technical fault.
Officials have stated that aviation engineers from the UK are expected to arrive in Thiruvananthapuram to carry out the necessary repairs.
According to a statement issued by the British High Commission last week, the emergency diversion was prompted by “adverse weather conditions,” which prevented the aircraft from safely landing back on the carrier. The pilot safely landed the aircraft at Thiruvananthapuram on June 15.
The F-35B is the only fifth generation fighter jet with short takeoff and vertical landing capabilities, making it ideal for operating from smaller decks, austere bases and ships. The official said the aircraft will return to active service once repairs and safety checks have been completed.
