As US President Donald Trump and entrepreneur Elon Musk renew their public fight over the 'Big Beautiful Bill', Trump biographer and journalist Michael Wolff has made a shocking claim that it was Trump's team that tipped off the New York Times (NYT) about Musk's alleged drug use. Last month, the NYT carried an article about the entrepreneur's "drug consumption that went beyond occasional use".
Wolff, in a podcast with US-based Daily Beast, said Trump was "getting personal" in his feud with Elon Musk, that he has been beefing about the Tesla CEO to his friends. The journalist said he had been asking about Trump's phone calls among some of his sources who speak to Trump regularly. "Trump speaks to them, and then they speak to other people, he said, adding, “whoever he calls, he says the same thing to everybody. So you know exactly what is on his mind."
The author of the bestseller Fire and Fury said Trump brings up Musk's drug use in every conversation. "He’s like, calling people to say, ‘do you think Elon is crazy?" Wolff said of Trump. Wolff added that Trump discusses Musk's drug use, stating "he takes drugs all the time" and that The New York Times wrote about it.
Wolff said Trump said on one of the calls, "Actually, we dropped a dime to The New York Times ... on Elon’s drug taking." However, the author said he had no clue whether it was someone in Trump's team who was actually behind the story or "he was just claiming credit for that".

The article in the NYT said Musk told people he was taking so much ketamine, a powerful anaesthetic, that it was affecting his bladder, a known effect of chronic use. He took Ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms and travelled with a daily medication box that held about 20 pills, including ones with the markings of the stimulant Adderall. The NYT cited sources were people who have seen it.
Musk did not respond to requests for comment this week about his drug use. The entrepreneur had earlier stated that he was prescribed ketamine for depression, taking it about every two weeks.
The feud between the two spilt over again on Wednesday with Musk stating lawmakers who campaigned on cutting spending but backed the bill "should hang their heads in shame." The Tesla CEO also called for the formation of a new political party and threatened to support primary challengers against nearly every single Republican in Congress. "[T]hey will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth," Musk said.
Musk's outburst riled up Donald Trump, who suggested DOGE take a look at the subsidies that Musk's companies have received so far, so as to save the federal government "BIG" money.
