Neil Druckmann steps away from ‘The Last of Us’ ahead of Season 3

Neil Druckmann, the co-creator behind the popular The Last of Us video game series and its equally acclaimed HBO adaptation, has officially announced that he would be stepping down from his creative role in the show ahead of the third season of the series. The second season of the show has just finished airing in May, and this abrupt announcement marks a significant shift in the direction of the franchise as it moves forward without one of its founding architects.
According to reports, Druckmann will continue to hold the credit as the executive producer but will no longer be involved in writing or directing any episodes in the forthcoming season. His formal statement was released on Wednesday, which explains that his decision stemmed from a desire to completely focus on his responsibilities at his gaming studio, Naughty Dog, where he currently serves as co-president and Head of Creative.

“I’ve made the difficult decision to step away from my creative involvement in The Last of Us on HBO”, Druckmann’s statement reads, “Now is the right time for me to transition my complete focus to Naughty Dog and its future projects, including writing and directing our exciting new game.” The aforementioned new game has reportedly been titled Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, and is slated for a release no earlier than 2027.
Druckmann’s exit leaves Craig Mazin, his longtime collaborator on the show, as the sole showrunner. Mazin, who previously created HBO’s Chernobyl, assured fans that the series will continue to honour the show’s roots. “It’s been a creative dream to work with Neil and bring an adaptation of his brilliant work to life on HBO”, he said, “While he focuses on that, I’ll continue to work with our brilliant cast and crew to deliver the show our audience has come to expect.”
The show’s executive producer and writer, Halley Gross, will also be exiting the show, as announced in a social media statement made shortly after Druckmann’s, “to make space for what comes next”. “Working alongside Neil, Craig, HBO, and this remarkable cast and crew has been life-changing,” she wrote. “The stories we told — about love, loss, and what it means to be human in a terrifying world — are exactly why I love this franchise.” Gross was introduced as a writer during Season 2, owing to her role in the creation of the video game.
The change in leadership arrives at a critical point in the series’ trajectory as the third season is expected to dive deeper into the character of Abby Anderson, played by Kaitlyn Dever, and will continue in its emotionally complex and divisive arc that shapes the core of the franchise.
While fans worry that Druckmann’s exit could signal an adverse change to the style of storytelling in the series, through a greater divide between the television adaptation and the original vision, both Druckmann and HBO maintain that the parting is amicable and rooted in mutual creative respect.
HBO has confirmed that the third season of The Last of Us is in development, with reports suggesting that the makers aim for a late 2026 or early 2027 release.
