Mega plantation drive underway: Jalandhar to plant over 3.5L saplings to boost green cover
In a significant move to enhance the district’s green cover, the Jalandhar administration is set to launch a mega plantation drive this monsoon, aiming to plant over 3.5 lakh saplings across the district.
Deputy Commissioner Dr Himanshu Aggarwal shared that this year’s plantation drive will be dedicated to the 350th martyrdom day of Guru Tegh Bahadur. The initiative will see active participation from government departments, NGOs and the general public. The drive, scheduled to be completed by August 15, 2025, will encompass all villages, blocks and urban wards throughout Jalandhar.
Dr Aggarwal emphasised that the plantation will include a mix of shade-giving trees, fruit trees and flowering plants, which will significantly enhance the district’s forest cover and overall environmental health. He urged citizens to take an active part, highlighting that trees play a crucial role in combating global warming and pollution by regulating temperatures and improving air quality.
“Environmental challenges can only be addressed through collective action, and mass participation in this plantation drive will ensure its success,” he added, appealing to residents to contribute towards a greener Jalandhar for future generations.
Divisional Forest Officer Jarnail Singh Bath informed that the forest department has set up multiple nurseries across the district to meet the sapling demand during the monsoon season.
While government departments will receive saplings free of cost for the drive, the general public can purchase them at subsidised rates to encourage maximum participation. Officials said the initiative is poised to make Jalandhar greener while fostering a sense of community responsibility towards environmental conservation.
