‘F1: Part 2’? Here's what producer and F1 champion Lewis Hamilton has to say

It is safe to say that the producers of Joseph Kosinski’s latest venture are relaxing as they see the amounting revenue at the box office. F1: The Movie has been smashing box office records left and right, grossing USD 144 million globally on opening weekend. And while production may be pocketing gold right now, it does not seem like they are too greedy for another round.

Seven-time Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton, who also acts as producer for the film, said a sequel is not on their minds at the moment. “We literally just finished it, so I think the last thing we want right now is a sequel,” Hamilton said according to the news agency AP, ahead of the British Grand Prix weekend at Silverstone.

F1: The Movie was a travel-heavy production. The film was shot during various grands prix across the 2023 and 2024 seasons including Silverstone, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Abu Dhabi, and many more. Citing that the filming was a strenuous task, Hamilton said, “It’s been four years in the making. It was a lot of work, particularly for (director Joseph Kosinski). It’s time away from your family, it’s time away from your kids, and also you need this to just simmer for a while, you know. Like, let’s enjoy it. I think the worst thing we probably could do is to rush into doing a sequel.”

Sequels for movies where the first instalment seems to be a closed chapter are often not well-received among the audience, and the Ferrari driver acknowledges that. "Most sequels are way worse, and so we don’t need to rush it. I think if we do do a sequel, I would say let’s really, really take our time in getting it even better.”

Hamilton recalls ending the filming of a scene similar to how he ends an F1 race—with a debrief. “Let’s review what we did, what we could have done better,” the 40-year-old said. “I don’t know if they ever do that in the movie business, but it’s something obviously I’ve learned from here.”
