According to preliminary police reports, the fatal attack took place in Jayaram Nagar, Thiruninravur, after Stephen Raj confronted Gomathi, as per a report on India Today. The couple, married for nearly ten years and parents to four children, had reportedly been in conflict over Gomathi’s continued friendship with a man known to them.

Witnesses told police that Gomathi was seen speaking with the man near the locality when Stephen Raj, who had allegedly got to know about the meeting, arrived at the spot, reported Times Now. An argument ensued, during which he allegedly pulled out a hidden weapon and attacked Gomathi with it. Gomathi, who sustained grievous injuries, died on the spot.
Soon, the bystanders called the police, while Stephen Raj fled the scene. Later, he surrendered at the Thiruninravur police station, where he reportedly confessed to the murder.
Both the victim and the accused were actively involved in the VCK party. While Gomathi served as a local councillor, Stephen Raj is said to have held a minor office-bearer position in the same party. The incident has caused deep dismay in local political and civic circles.
