Two days before engagement, woman kills self

A 26-year-old woman reportedly died by suicide on the Panjab University campus this morning. Amandeep Kaur, daughter of a senior university employee and herself working on a temporary basis at the university, was due to be engaged on July 6.

The tragic incident came to light in the morning when Amandeep’s mother knocked at her room’s door but got no response. She was found hanging in the room.

A team from the Sector 11 police station, led by PU campus post in charge SI Naveen Kumar and SHO Jaiveer Rana, arrived at the spot and inspected the room of the victim where she was found dead. The woman was declared dead on the spot. The police shifted the body to the mortuary where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

A suicide note was recovered from her room, which read: “I’m sorry. I’m not able to handle the situation. I am ending this of my own will.” The note indicates that Amandeep was undergoing emotional turmoil and had taken the step voluntarily.

According to the police, the discovery of the note left by the girl and the absence of any signs of grave provocation have led investigators to rule out, at this stage, any suggestion of abetment to suicide. However, the police are conducting a detailed inquiry into the matter. They are speaking with the family members and close associates of the deceased.

Meanwhile, a forensic team also visited the spot. Forensic experts collected evidence from the scene, after which the body was removed from the room.

The police authorities have urged the public to seek help in times of mental distress. They assured that a thorough investigation into the case would be carried out.
