BSP slams 30% power tariff hike as anti-people, demands rollback

Haryana state president of the Bahujan Samaj Party Krishna Jamalpur has criticised the state government’s decision to raise electricity tariff by up to 30% from April 1. Terming the move as “highly condemnable, anti-people, and insensitive,” he pointed out that it would severely affect common people, especially the poor, farmers, workers, and low-income consumers.

Addressing party workers in Sirsa on Friday, Jamalpur said the new electricity pricing structure introduced by the state government, including changes to the slab system, sharp increases in per-unit rates, and the imposition of fixed charges even on consumers who use less than 50 units, clearly showed that the government was turning public services into a source of profit.

He emphasised that at a time when the country is already facing issues like unemployment, inflation, and economic inequality, imposing such a burden on essential services like electricity demonstrates the BJP government’s disconnect with the struggles of the people.

The BSP leader asked the state government to immediately revoke the hike and remove the fixed charges for low-income groups, farmers, and workers. He stated that electricity should be treated as a basic public service and a fundamental human right, not a means to make a profit.

Jamalpur warned that if the government does not reverse its “anti-people” and “inhumane” decision, the BSP would be forced to launch a statewide

public movement.
