Amritsar: CRPF ex-DSP kills son over property

A retired Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) shot his son near the ESI Hospital on Majitha Road on Friday.

The accused has been identified as Tarsem Singh, a resident of Rajasansi, while the victim, Bachitter Singh.

The accused also opened fire on his first wife, Jageer Kaur, and daughter-in-law, Parmjeet Kaur (wife of the deceased), injuring both of them seriously.

Police officials said Tarsem Singh had been married twice. His second wife has two sons. A long-standing dispute over property rights between the families had escalated over time.

Tarsem’s daughter from his first wife, Palwinder Kaur (45), said they had filed a complaint against him following a recent altercation in which the sons from the second marriage allegedly assaulted Jageer Kaur. Both parties had been reportedly summoned to appear on Friday for mediation.

When both sides met near the hospital, a heated verbal exchange broke out. In a sudden and violent turn of events, Tarsem Singh pulled out his licensed revolver and fired four rounds, hitting Bachitter Singh, Jageer Kaur and Parmjeet Kaur. The victims collapsed on the road as panic ensued in the area.

Bachitter Singh died on the spot, while the injured women were rushed to a hospital, where they remain in critical condition.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Amritsar (North), Rishabh Bhola, said the accused was immediately apprehended by police personnel stationed at a nearby naka. He was taken into custody and brought to the Majitha Road police station.

Palwinder Kaur revealed that her father abandoned them when she was just six months old and later married another woman. Her mother raised both her and Bachitter by stitching clothes. When the children grew up, they demanded a share in the father’s property, which Tarsem Singh refused to give, leading to a court case that is still ongoing.

The police have registered a case of murder and attempted murder.
