Vehicle falls into Bist Doab canal; boy dies, mother injured

Mahindra Pick Up lost control and fell into the Bist Doab Canal near Rawalpindi village while trying to save stray animals, which came in front of it, due to which a minor died while his mother got seriously injured.

According to information, Rakesh Kumar, a resident of Kaihri, Badaun district (UP), and currently a resident of Nangal Khurd (Mahilpur), said that about 30-32 of persons were going back to their village in Uttar Pradesh in the vehicle after sowing paddy. When they had just reached near Rawalpindi village, a stray animal came in front of the vehicle. To save it, the driver turned away the vehicle, only to find another one in front of it. While saving it, the driver lost control over the vehicle and it fell into the canal. His 14-year-old son Akash died, while his wife Geeta got seriously injured. Other passengers escaped with minor injuries.

The vehicle was being driven by Manoj, also a resident of Badaun. The victims said that all their belongings, mobile phones and cash were washed away. A passerby informed the Garhshankar police and ASI Mahinder Pal reached the spot along with police personnel and extracted the people out of the vehicle. The ASI said that migrant labourers from Hoshiarpur were returning to Uttar Pradesh, gathering their friends from different places, and near Rawalpindi the Pick Up fell into the canal. Post-mortem examination of the victim was done and the body handed over to the family.
