Himachal sees wettest June in 12 years

Himachal Pradesh witnessed its highest rainfall in the month of June after 12 years as the state recorded about 34 per cent surplus rain last month. While the state received 135 mm rain this June, it had recorded 241 mm rain the same month in 2013. The highest rainfall ever recorded in June was 252.7 mm rain in 1971.

As per the State’s Meteorological Department, in June 2024 the state had received 46.5 mm rain, while it received 121.7 mm rain the same month in 2023. Similarly, the state received 67.1 mm in June 2022, 83.8 mm in June 2021, 68.1 mm in June 2020, 55.1 mm in June 2019, 120 mm in June 2018, 122.8 mm in June 2017, 101.1 mm in June 2016, 87.9 mm in June 2015 and 52.9 mm in June 2014.

This year, Hamirpur district has recorded the highest rain surplus, which is 86%, as it received 212.1 mm rain against 114.1 mm normal rainfall.

Mandi recorded 79% rain surplus as it recorded 306.2 mm rain against 171.5 mm normal rainfall, Sirmaur recorded 73% rain surplus and received 287.4 mm against 165.8 mm, Shimla and Solan recorded 64% rain surplus each as Shimla z 181 mm against 110.4 mm, while Solan received 224.8 mm against 165.8 mm, Bilaspur recorded 61% rain deficit as it received 164.5 mm against 102.1 mm rain, Una recorded 52% rain surplus as it received 158.1 mm against 103.8 mm, Kangra received 47% rain surplus with the district receiving 265.9 mm rain against 181.4 mm and Kullu recorded 40 % rain surplus as it recorded 121.3 mm against 86.9 mm normal rainfall.

Three districts of the state received less than normal rainfall in June. Chamba recorded 5% rain deficit as it received 115.7 mm rain against 121.8 mm normal rainfall, Kinnaur recorded 40% rain deficit with the district receiving 31.2 mm rain against 41.8 mm rain and tribal district Lahaul and Spiti recorded 53% rain deficit as it received 22.5 mm rain against 47.8 mm rain, which is normal for the district in June.
