Residents raise alarm over illegal liquor sale, drug abuse in Sirsa village

In a complaint addressed to the top authorities, locals of Kesupura village in Sirsa, have raised serious concerns about the ongoing illegal sale of liquor and narcotics in the area. They called for immediate action by the local administration to stop the activities, citing health risks and social unrest.

In his letter to the Chief Secretary, the Director-General of Police, and other senior officials, resident Kartar Singh highlighted that despite court orders and previous petitions, a liquor sub-vend was re-established at Mallekan Road, Kesupura. He claimed that the excise licensee was unlawfully selling liquor from makeshift kiosks, disregarding both legal orders and local resistance. Singh added that the villagers, including the gram panchayat, were planning to take action if the administration failed to intervene.

According to Singh, the police have repeatedly ignored calls for help from the panchayat and villagers, allowing the liquor vend to continue operating with impunity. In his complaint, he also accused the police of political bias and alleged protection for the liquor mafia, further intensifying the situation.

Moreover, Singh and other local villagers drew attention to a more alarming issue — the open sale of narcotic drugs like ‘chitta’ by a local smuggler near the Gurdwara Kesupura. The villagers claimed that despite complaints to the police, no serious action was taken to stop the illegal drug trade. They criticised the police for failing to act, leaving the youth vulnerable to addiction.

In his plea, Singh appealed to the authorities to enforce law and shut down the liquor vend, especially as it was located less than a kilometre from another similar outlet. He emphasised that the location violated the Excise Policy 2025-2027, which mandated a minimum distance between liquor vends in rural areas. Singh further requested the immediate arrest of local smuggler, accusing him of supplying narcotics and influencing the local youth.

In the matter, Ellenabad Police Station SHO Pargat Singh said no such complaint was received from the DEC (Deputy Excise Officer) so far, and if a complaint was received from their side, immediate action would be taken.
