Monsoon mission: Dist admn gears up to plant 3L saplings
Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney announced that around three lakh saplings will be planted across Amritsar district during the monsoon season. A special highlight of the initiative is the creation of a ‘Mini Miyawaki Forest’ at the District Administrative Complex with the support of Vardhman Steel and Eco Sikh.
The Deputy Commissioner added that despite limited space at the complex, 1,100 saplings have already been planted to develop the forest. “This model, inspired by the Nanak Bagichi initiative, can be replicated by individuals on their own plots or smaller areas as well,” she said.
The Deputy Commissioner emphasised that the selection of plantation sites is based on heat map analysis, identifying locations with higher surface temperatures, some exceeding, 50 degrees Celsius. These spots will receive increased green cover in hopes of reducing temperatures in the coming summers.
She highlighted that the Miyawaki method, developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, is a scientifically proven technique that allows for dense, fast-growing forests in urban areas using limited land. Vardhman Steel is also planting 30,000 more saplings as part of the same effort. Notably, this is the eighth Miyawaki forest developed by the company and is expected to become one of the largest in Amritsar, significantly enhancing urban
oxygen levels.
Sawhney also announced that the district administration will recognise and honour residents, who not only plant trees but also commit to nurturing them. These individuals will receive appreciation certificates as a mark of gratitude for their contribution to the environment.
On this occasion, District Forest Officer Rajesh Kumar urged the residents to dig planting pits (2 X 2 ft) two to three days before plantation to improve survival chances. He invited government departments to officially notify his office for free saplings.
He further shared that 16 nurseries have been set up across the district, and interested NGOs, private schools, or colleges can procure saplings for Rs 2 per plant, while commercial establishments can purchase them at Rs 20 per plant. For sapling collection, the residents can contact the District Forest Office near Taran Wala Pul.
