Bihar News: Five Members of a Family Lynched and Burnt Alive in Purnia Over Witchcraft Suspicion
A horrifying incident rooted in Superstition has shocked Bihar’s Purnia district. On the night of July 6, five members of a single family were brutally beaten and then burned alive by a mob in Tetaga village, under Mufassil police station. The mob suspected the family of practicing witchcraft after a villager’s child allegedly died during a healing ritual, and another fell ill. In a fit of rage and blind belief, over 100 villagers reportedly surrounded the family, assaulted them with sticks and rods, and then set them on fire. After killing them, the mob attempted to hide the crime by stuffing the charred bodies into sacks and concealing them near a pond, nearly five kilometers from the crime scene. The police later recovered all five bodies, most of which were over 80% burned. The deceased were relatives of a man named Babulal, who had reportedly performed the ritual. So far, three suspects have been arrested, and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed. Raids are ongoing to capture the other accused. The heinous crime has once again raised serious questions about law enforcement in rural Bihar and the deadly consequences of superstition-fueled violence.
