PTI, Imran Khan’s YouTube Channels Among 27 Blocked In Pakistan’s Latest Crackdown On Critics
In a move to silence critics of the Pakistani army, an Islamabad-based court on Tuesday ordered the blocking of 27 YouTube channels in the country based on a report by the national cybersecurity investigation agency. These channels have been accused of spreading “propaganda” against the Pakistani military, government and officials.
Among the banned channels are the official YouTube account of Pakistan’s main opposition party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and the personal YouTube account of former prime minister Imran Khan, who is currently lodged in jail. The ban comes amid growing tensions between the military establishment and the PTI. Recently, PTI and Imran Khan issued statements following a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Field Marshal Asim Munir, claiming that the truth about Pakistan has come out: it is not the civilian government but the military that truly runs the country.
Several independent journalists have also been targeted in this crackdown. Veteran journalist Moeed Pirzada, human rights activist and journalist Arzoo Kazmi and Daily Qudrat are among those whose channels have been blocked. All of them are known for their critical commentary on the military and government and are now facing consequences for speaking out.
Proxy YouTube Channels Linked To Lashkar, Jaish Remain Active
Censorship of media and social media is not new in Pakistan, but this round of suppression comes at a time when the state and intelligence agency ISI are glorifying terrorists and openly promoting extremist ideologies. While the opposition and independent journalists are being silenced, proxy YouTube channels linked to Pakistan’s state-sponsored terror outfits like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed remain active, freely spreading anti-India rhetoric and allegedly promoting terrorism with impunity.
Thus, this latest crackdown raises serious concerns about freedom of expression, selective censorship, and the deepening nexus between Pakistan’s military and information control mechanisms.
