Kolkata gang-rape case: Court remands accused to judicial custody till July 22

A Kolkata court on Tuesday remanded three people in connection with the gangrape of the law student inside the South Calcutta College campus, till July 22.
The three accused, Monojit Mishra, an alumnus and temporary staffer of the college, and two current students, Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee, have been remanded to judicial custody.
According to PTI, a security guard of the college, Pinaki Banerjee, who was also arrested in connection with the case, was also forwarded to judicial custody till July 22.

A first-year student of South Calcutta Law College was allegedly gang-raped in the college premises by Mishra, assisted by Ahmed and Mukherjee, on the evening of June 25. The prosecution submitted that the victim was given an inhaler by the accused so that they could physically torture her after she was in full consciousness.
Meanwhile, a Supreme Court lawyer has sent a letter petition to the Chief Justice of India, B.R. Gavai, urging the apex court to take suo motu cognizance of the alleged gang-rape and to transfer the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to ensure a free and fair probe. Filed by advocate Satyam Singh Rajpoot, calls for urgent judicial intervention and seeks action against Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee and MLA Madan Mitra for their remarks allegedly blaming and shaming the victim.
