Hope reborn: Sirmaur’s hostel for special needs children reopens

In a heartening development for inclusive education in Sirmaur district, the hostel for Children with Special Needs (CWSN) at Boys Shamsher School, Nahan, has reopened after nearly four years of closure. Refurbished, renewed and fully equipped, the facility stands as a testament to the district’s commitment to providing equitable educational opportunities for all children.

Originally launched in 2012, the hostel was forced to shut down in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In the years since, the need for a safe and nurturing residential facility for differently-abled children had become increasingly urgent. Responding to this need, authorities initiated a complete overhaul of the infrastructure to ensure a welcoming and supportive environment for special children.

With Rs 6 lakh approved under Samagra Shiksha by the SPD, the facility underwent major renovations. The upgraded hostel now boasts improved sleeping arrangements, modern sanitation facilities and an inverter system to guarantee uninterrupted power supply — critical for the comfort and care of students with special needs.

The hostel, with a capacity for seven students, is now ready to receive its first batch, pending formal consent from parents and guardians. The school administration has assured that all necessary safety and comfort measures are in place and future plans are in motion to expand support for CWSN students in the region.

Speaking at the inauguration, MLA Ajay Solanki lauded the initiative. “Ensuring dignity, safety and equal opportunity for every child — especially those with special needs — is our collective responsibility. I wholeheartedly commend the school administration for reviving this hostel with such care and commitment. This initiative will go a long way in building a more inclusive and compassionate society,” he said.
