Microsoft (MSFT) recently announced layoffs of its global workforce by 9,000 “to implement organizational changes necessary to best position the company and teams for success in a dynamic marketplace,” according to a company spokesperson.

Intel Layoffs

Now another tech giant, Intel Corp. is set to lay off 529 employees in Oregon this month as part of a larger cost-cutting initiative that could impact up to 20% of its global workforce, according to a report.

While Intel has not officially disclosed the total number of job cuts, a source cited by Bloomberg indicated that as much as one-fifth of the company’s global staff may eventually be affected.

The cuts will affect operations at Intel’s campuses in Aloha and Hillsboro starting July 15, according to a regulatory filing.

Why Is Intel Laying Off 529 Employees?

The layoffs are part of a major restructuring effort led by newly appointed CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who took the helm in April amid growing pressure to reverse Intel’s decline and regain its competitive edge in the semiconductor industry.

In a statement, the Santa Clara-based company said the job cuts are  done to streamline operations and boosting competitiveness:
“We are making these decisions based on careful consideration of what’s needed to position our business for the future, and we will treat people with care and respect as we complete this important work.”

Intel further noted, “Removing organizational complexity and empowering our engineers will enable us to better serve the needs of our customers and strengthen our execution.”

Intel’s Competition With Nvidia

Once a leader in semiconductor innovation, Intel has struggled in recent years, ceding its edge in chip manufacturing to competitors like TSMC and missing the surge in demand for AI-driven computing hardware—a market now led by Nvidia Corp.

CEO Lip-Bu Tan has emphasized the need for bold and decisive action to reposition Intel for a future shaped by artificial intelligence, intense foundry competition, and faster innovation cycles.
