IMD Rain Alert: Delhi-NCR received torrential monsoon rains on Wednesday (July 9). This brought relief from the humidity, but waterlogging and traffic jams occurred in many areas. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for heavy rains in 14 districts of UP on Thursday (July 10). Rains are expected to continue in many districts of UP till July 13. A ‘red alert’ has also been issued for rain again in Delhi-NCR today.
Reports of waterlogging and traffic disruptions came from many parts of the city including Nehru Place, Aurobindo Marg, Kailash Colony, Lajpat Nagar, Siri Fort Road, Chirag Delhi Flyover, Outer Ring Road, GK Marg, Rail Bhavan, Akshardham, Ashram, ITO, Pul Prahladpur, MB Road, MG Road, Old Rohtak Road, Shadipur, Madhuban Chowk and National Highway 8.
60 mm of rain recorded
The Najafgarh weather station recorded 60 mm rainfall between 5:30 pm and 8:30 pm on Wednesday. This was followed by 50.5 mm rainfall at Aya Nagar, 37 mm at Pragati Maidan, 22 mm at North Campus, 30 mm at Pusa, 14.4 mm at Palam, 11.5 mm at IGNOU, 4 mm at Janakpuri, 6.5 mm at Narayana and 1.5 mm at Lodhi Road. Meanwhile, the primary weather station at Safdarjung recorded only 1.4 mm rainfall.
‘Red alert’ issued in Delhi
On Wednesday evening, about 29 complaints of waterlogging were received at the Public Works Department (PWD) control room. These complaints were from New Friends Colony, Jhilmil Underpass, Loni Gol Chakkar, Durgapuri Chowk, Wazirabad Road and Yamuna Vihar and surrounding areas. Meanwhile, in its latest forecast, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘red alert’ for Delhi.
No alert was issued for the city earlier in the day. But by afternoon, an ‘orange alert’ was issued. Now, in the latest weather update, it has been changed to a ‘red alert’.
Heavy rain warning
The IMD said that moderate to heavy rain, thundershowers and lightning are expected in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). Amid the forecast of thundershowers and moderate to heavy rain, the department has urged people to avoid open spaces, not take shelter under trees, stay away from weak walls and such structures and avoid going near water bodies. The Meteorological Department said that the maximum temperature was recorded at 35.6 degrees Celsius, one degree below average. The minimum temperature was 26.4 degrees Celsius, 1.5 degrees below normal.
