World’s best luggage handling airport in Japan is sinking. Here’s why

In 2024, Japan’s Kansai Airport was named the world’s best for luggage handling, with a record of over ten years without losing a single bag. Once praised as an engineering marvel, the airport was built on a huge artificial island in Osaka Bay. However, the man-made structure is slowly sinking into the soft clay beneath it. Since its opening in 1994, the ground under the first island has sunk by nearly 3.84 metres (12.6 feet)
