Uttar Pradesh Tragedy: Man Dies by Suicide After Losing ₹1.10 Crore To Mobile Games, Harassed By Moneylenders
Etah: A middle aged man, Yatendra Singh from Jirasmi village in the Kotwali Dehat area, died by suicide on Tuesday night after reportedly losing ₹1.10 crore in mobile games. He was found hanged, allegedly due to harassment and threats from moneylenders.
According to his younger brother, Chandraketu, Yatendra was under immense mental stress from the demands of lenders. Yatendra had accumulated approximately ₹30 lakh in debt from moneylenders and had already squandered about ₹80 lakh worth of his own property on mobile games. Despite warnings from his family, he continued playing.
Yatendra, who previously worked as a taxi driver and also ran an RO and flour mill business, was earning around ₹15,000 per month. This income was insufficient to cover his household expenses and the ₹1.30 lakh monthly debt repayments he owed to moneylenders.
This incident marks the third such death in Etah due to debt related stress in the past four months. Previously, a young man from Bhagipur village died by suicide on March 26, and a home guard from Gadesra village in Awagarh police station area died by suicide on June 13, both reportedly due to overwhelming debt.
Police have confirmed Yatendra's death by suicide and are awaiting the post-mortem report to ascertain the exact cause. Further action will be taken upon receipt of a formal complaint.
