Elephant gave birth to a baby on railway track, train driver stopped goods train for two hours

The incident took place near Sarawaha village between Barkakana and Hazaribagh stations on the Ranchi-Koderma route in East Central Railway.

In Ramgarh, Jharkhand, a train waited for two hours near the railway track for the birth of an elephant’s baby. During the delivery, the movement of trains on the railway track was stopped. With the help of local villagers and coordination of the railway and forest department, the elephant was delivered safely.
Officials said that in Ramgarh, the railway and forest department worked together to protect the pregnant elephant trapped in trouble. They stopped the moving freight train for two hours to ensure the safe delivery of her baby on a railway line passing through dense forest. The incident took place near Sarwaha village between Barkakana and Hazaribagh stations on the Ranchi-Koderma route in East Central Railway. This is the route which is considered to be part of the active elephant corridor.
The incident came to light after a video went viral on social media which took place on June 25. “Our forest guard informed me at 3 am that a pregnant elephant was in trouble and was experiencing labour pain. The guard said if the movement of trains was not stopped, there was a possibility of the elephant getting crushed,” Ramgarh Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Nitish Kumar told PTI.
Kumar said that he immediately contacted the railway control room in Barkakana. Then instructed that the movement of trains be stopped till the elephant gives birth to the baby. Shortly after, a freight train was stopped. Then the elephant gave birth to the baby on the tracks.
In the viral video, the mother and the newborn baby are seen on the track. Officials said that the local people came forward to help both of them. Soon after this, the mother and the baby were reunited with their herd inside the forest. After the delivery, the elephant and the newborn baby were safely transported to the elephant corridor forest.
This video has gone viral on the Internet. People are praising this humane decision. Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav also shared its video on social media platform X. Describing the incident as a living example of sensitivity, he said that while usually news of conflict between humans and animals is heard. At the same time, this video is an inspiring example of human compassion and coexistence with wildlife.
Bhupender Yadav wrote on X, “Glad to share this example of harmonious human-animal co-existence beyond the news of human-animal conflict. Train waited for two hours after an elephant in Jharkhand gave birth to her baby. Video shows how the two later moved on happily. Following the government’s holistic approach, @MOEFCC and @RailMinIndia have surveyed 3,500 km of railway track in the country and identified over 110 vulnerable spots. It is heartening to see such heartwarming results from these efforts. Special congratulations to @JharkhandVan officials for their sensitivity which helped the female elephant give birth to her baby.”
