A man is on the run after slitting the throat of his estranged wife and mutilating the genitals of her live-in partner in Odisha's Jajpur. The accused was helped by his family in the crime, as their intervention resulted in the arrival of the victims, who are undergoing treatment in a critical condition, at the scene of the assault.
The primary accused, Manoj Kumar Mohanty, was helped by his brother and first cousin to tie up both victims before they were attacked with a sharp object, the woman said.
The woman decided to run away from Manoj Kumar Mohanty's family due to domestic abuse, she told the police. She was constantly harassed verbally and physically by his family, and she decided enough was enough and left to live with Prashant Nath — her current partner.
Her husband's family never forgave her, and the woman wanted peace, which forced them to meet the accused as asked. They were told it was a reconciliation meeting, and the couple went to the canal bank near Malahat as told by the other party in the hope of putting the matter to an end once and for all. However, once they reached the area, the three men ambushed them, NDTV said in a report.
Prashant Nath and the woman were tied up before Mohanty launched an assault. Nath's genitals were mutilated before the woman's throat was deeply slit. However, the duo screamed loud enough to alert the locals who finally noticed a commotion in the neighbourhood, the news report said. It was their intervention that ensured both victims received medical care in the nick of time. However, their condition remains critical at the District Headquarters Hospital in Jajpur.
