'Khalistan' Link In Kapil Sharma Cafe Shooting: Terrorist Harjeet Singh Laddi
A shooting outside a café in Canada linked to comedian Kapil Sharma shocked the nation on Thursday. A video from the scene shows a man pulling out a pistol from a car and opening fire. The accused has been identified as Harjit Singh, alias Laddi, a resident of Gharpadhana village in Nawanshahr district, Punjab. His father is Kuldeep Singh.
NIA Declares Laddi A 'Wanted' Terrorist
According to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Laddi is an active member of a pro-Khalistan terror module and has ties with foreign handlers from groups like Babbar Khalsa International (BKI). The NIA has declared him a fugitive terrorist and announced a ₹10 lakh reward for information leading to his capture.
Laddi's name also cropped up in the murder of VHP leader Vikas Bagga in India. In June 2024, the NIA took over the investigation, which revealed that Harjit Laddi, Kulbir Singh alias Sidhu, and others had conspired in the killing.
Direct Links To Babbar Khalsa's Global Network
The NIA says Laddi is not only actively involved but also in regular contact with overseas terror financiers and handlers. Investigators have gathered multiple pieces of digital evidence showing his communication and financial transactions with operatives linked to Babbar Khalsa International.
No FIR In Punjab Yet
Interestingly, Punjab Police has not yet filed any official FIR or chargesheet against Harjit Singh Laddi. Despite this, the NIA has labelled him one of its most wanted, hinting at the sensitive nature of the evidence against him.
Officials believe that Laddi's capture could expose a wider network of operatives running terror campaigns abroad while remaining hidden in India.
Meanwhile, security has been tightened outside comedian Kapil Sharma’s Mumbai home after the shooting incident, which targeted his café in Canada. Police personnel were deployed outside his Oshiwara residence on Friday.
