It has been over 22 years since Farah Khan’s blockbuster film Om Shanti Om (2007) hit the silver screens. Filled by terrific performances of Shah Rukh Khan, Arjun Rampal, Shreyas Talpade, Kirron Kher and Deepika Padukone in her first film, Om Shanti Om is a musical film full of drama, action, comedy and of course romance. What is Om Shanti Om about?

Set in 90s backdrop, Om Shanti Om follows the story of a junior artist Om Prakash Mehra (portrayed by Shah Rukh Khan), who falls madly in love with a prominent actress Shantipriya (Deepika Padukone). After he secretly discovers that she is trapped in an abusive marriage with a producer, Om tries to help her but dies doing so. 30 years later, he is reborn as a son of a superstar, living the life he had always dreamed of as an aspiring actor. But what’s interesting is that Om is born with memories of his past life. After meeting the producer who killed him and Shanti, he sets out on a mission to expose him and seek justice for Shanti’s murder.

Om Shanti Om vs Saawariya box office clash

Om Shanti Om clashed with Ranbir Kapoor’s debut release Saawariya at the box office on November 9, 2007. Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone’s film outperformed Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s romantic drama, earning Rs 152 crore worldwide, while Saawariya earned just Rs 39.22 crore. Made on a budget of Rs 40 crore, the Farah Khan directorial became the highest-grossing Hindi movie in 2007, surpassing Dhoom 2, Saawariya at the box office.

According to IMDb, Om Shanti Om won a total 38 awards and received about 30 nominations. At the 55th National Film Awards, Deepika Padukone won Best Female Debut award, and Shah Rukh Khan bagged Best Actor award. Whereas, Shreyas Talpade won best supporting actor, and Farah Khan won Best Director award.

Om Shanti Om saw reunion of Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan after their blockbuster collaboration Main Hoon Na. For the unversed, Vivek Oberoi was first offered a role in Om Shanti Om, but he turned down the offer and chose gangster drama Shootout at Lokhandwala over Farah Khan’s romantic drama.
