In his latest tariff letters, US President Donald Trump has imposed 30 per cent tariff on Mexico from August 1. This comes in the backdrop of the US levying up to 30 per cent duty on several other countries including the European Union and Canada, its northern neighbour.

In his tariff letter to Mexican president, Trump said both countries have a strong relationship, but the US has decided to impose tariffs to deal with Mexico's "fentanyl crisis". He blamed that it was due to Mexico's failure that the drugs are flowing into the US, saying the Cartels are "made up of the most despicable people who ever walked the Earth.

"It is a Great Honor for me to send you this letter in that it demonstrates the strength and commitment of our Trading Relationship, and the fact that the United States of America has agreed to continue working with Mexico," the US president wrote.

Trump acknowledged that Mexico is helping him secure the southern border. "BUT, what Mexico has done, is not enough. Mexico still has not stopped the Cartels who are trying to turn all of North America into a Narco-Trafficking Playground. Obviously, I cannot let that happen!” he added.

The POTUS then said from August 1, US will charge Mexico a tariff of 30 per cent, which is separate from all sectoral tariffs. Warning that “gods transshipped to evade higher Tariffs will be subject to that higher Tariff," he said there will be no tariff if Mexico, or companies within the country manufacture products in the US. "We will do everything possible to get approvals quickly, professionally, and routinely - In other words, in a matter of weeks," Trump pointed out.

In another warning, Trump said if Mexico raises tariffs in retaliation, then the same amount of tariff will be added to the 30 per cent imposed by the US.
