Thane: In the Bramhand area of Ghodbunder, two thieves on a motorcycle snatched gold ornaments weighing over 11 tolas from the neck of an elderly woman on Tuesday. Following the incident, a case was registered at the Kasarvadavali police station after the woman filed a complaint.

According to a report by Loksatta, the incident occurred when the 65-year-old woman, who resides with her family in the Patlipada area of Ghodbunder, travelled to Mumbai to maintain her second residence. In the evening, as she began her return journey to Thane, she boarded a bus from Thane railway station towards Bramhand. After getting off the bus stop, she stopped to buy vegetables before heading home.

Later, while taking a break under a tree and then continuing her walk home around 9 p.m., two men on a two-wheeler approached her. The rider was wearing a helmet, while the pillion rider had covered his face with a handkerchief. As they neared, the pillion rider swiftly snatched the gold ornaments from her neck and fled the scene. The stolen items include a gold necklace weighing nine tolas, a mangalsutra of one and a half tolas, and a gold chain weighing nine grams.

Shocked by the incident, the woman returned home and informed her daughter. The next day, she went to the Kasarvadavali police station and lodged a formal complaint. Based on her account, police registered a case of theft involving the stolen gold ornaments, as reported.

According to a report, in recent days, Thane city has seen a spike in incidents of chain-snatching and mobile theft, especially by culprits using motorcycles. Such crimes have become increasingly frequent on major routes, including the Mumbai-Nashik Highway, Eastern Express Highway, and Ghodbunder Road.

Due to the rising number of such thefts, concerns over pedestrian safety have grown. Citizens are now demanding increased police patrolling and the installation of CCTV cameras in vulnerable areas. There is also a rising fear of physical injuries, such as neck strain or trauma, resulting from the violent manner in which the jewellery is snatched.
