Explore possibility of cargo terminal near Ambala airport: Vij to aviation ministry

Following the establishment of a domestic airport in Ambala Cantonment, expected to be inaugurated later this year, Haryana Cabinet Minister Anil Vij has urged the Ministry of Civil Aviation to explore the possibility of developing a cargo terminal facility near the airport.

Vij has sent a letter to the Civil Aviation Minister to explore the possibility as ample land is available near the domestic airport where the facility could be developed.

During a meeting between officials of the central and the state aviation departments in Ambala Cantonment regarding operations of the airport, the matter to explore the possibility of establishing a cargo terminal was discussed.

Speaking to The Tribune, Cabinet Minister Anil Vij said, “The establishment of domestic airport in Ambala will benefit not only the residents of Ambala and nearby cities but also people from other states. Similarly, a cargo terminal facility here will benefit the entire region. The project will transform economic activity in the region. There are two industrial areas in Ambala, a hub of scientific apparatus manufacturing in Ambala Cantonment and a famous clothes market in Ambala City. Similarly, several major industries are in operation in the nearby districts.

“Since no such facility is available here, it was discussed that the possibility must be explored. Following the discussion, I have initiated communication with the Ministry of Civil Aviation. A letter has been sent. Ample land is available near the airport where a cargo terminal can be established. Residents of nearby villages were also interested to provide their land when we were searching for suitable land to establish the domestic airport. However, a 20-acre defence land next to the Air Force station was finalised for the terminal. The runway of the Air Force will be used for the project,” he added.

Meanwhile, the minister has also sought the appointment of staff to begin operations from the domestic airport. While the assistant manager (operations) was appointed in May, the remaining staff is yet to be appointed.

“The airport is ready with all the equipment in place. A letter has been sent to the Ministry of Aviation for the appointment of the remaining staff. We are planning to get the inauguration done and to start operations after the rains,” the Cabinet Minister said.
