Goldberg loses final match to Gunther

WWE's final premium live event before SummerSlam 2025 took place in Atlanta, Georgia and featured a highly emotional moment for fans the farewell match of Hall of Famer Goldberg. In front of his hometown crowd, Goldberg stepped into the ring one last time to challenge Gunther for the prestigious World Heavyweight Championship. This long-awaited clash followed up on a tense confrontation between the two at last year’s Bad Blood event, held at the very same venue.

Despite the immense hype and Goldberg’s legendary reputation, the result didn’t favor the veteran. The match saw Goldberg battling through a noticeable knee injury, which Gunther smartly targeted throughout the bout. The WWE legend still managed to land some of his iconic moves, including a thunderous Spear and a Jackhammer that had the crowd on their feet. Yet, Gunther showcased his resilience by kicking out of both finishing maneuvers.

Adding to the drama, Goldberg’s son, Gage, made a brief appearance during the match, providing an emotional boost to his father and a bit of chaos in the ring.

However, the tide ultimately turned in Gunther’s favor. In a powerful display of ring psychology and technical skill, Gunther locked in a rear naked choke, wearing down the veteran until Goldberg passed out resulting in a submission loss.

This marked only the second time in Goldberg’s career that he was submitted in such a fashion, the first being against Roman Reigns at Elimination Chamber 2022.

Goldberg's Legendary Career

Goldberg made his debut back in 1997 for WCW before going on to enjoy a legendary run, where he would remain undefeated for 173 matches. This was the longest undefeated streak in history, before Asuka ended this record in 2018.

Goldberg won the World Championship five times, including the two Universal Championship runs he had post his return to wrestling in 2016. His last win for the belt came in 2020, where he defeated The Fiend Bray Wyatt. The legend has also been inducted into the Hall of Fame back in 2017.
