Indian Army’s Cross-Border Strike Hits ULFA-I Camps In Myanmar; Top Leader Nayan Asom Reportedly Killed

In one of the most daring cross-border strikes in recent memory, Indian forces have reportedly launched a high-precision drone assault on multiple insurgent camps belonging to the United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I) deep inside Myanmar.

According to early reports emerging on Saturday, July 13, as many as four ULFA-I camps were hit in the early morning hours in what appears to be a coordinated offensive involving close to 100 drones. The powerful aerial operation is believed to have specifically targeted the group’s strongholds in Myanmar’s Sagaing Region, a known hotspot for insurgent activity.

Sources suggest that the attack may have dealt a severe blow to the banned outfit’s leadership. Among the dead is allegedly ULFA-I’s Lieutenant General Nayan Asom, a senior figure in the group’s military hierarchy known for his operational planning and training of cadres. While his death has not yet been confirmed officially, multiple unverified reports indicate he may have perished in the assault on the Eastern Command Headquarters (ECHQ) at Hoyat Basti.

The Indian Army, when approached for comment, neither confirmed nor denied the operation. A spokesperson from the Army’s Public Relations Office told India Today NE that they had no information to share on the matter at this time.

One of the key targets in the strike was the ULFA-I’s notorious 779 Camp located in Waktham Basti. Sources claim that five militants were inside the camp when the drones struck, although there have been no confirmed reports of injuries or deaths from that particular site.

Meanwhile, the assault on the Hoyat Basti camp—reportedly more intense—was aimed directly at ULFA-I’s eastern command structure. The precision and scale of the attack suggest careful planning, with drones allegedly delivering a series of coordinated strikes on multiple installations.

Beyond ULFA-I, the operation is also said to have hit positions held by the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-K), another insurgent group with camps in the area. Unconfirmed intelligence inputs suggest there may have been multiple casualties among NSCN-K cadres, though exact numbers remain unknown.

This unprecedented drone strike comes amid a sharp uptick in militant activity in India’s Northeast, particularly in Assam, where security forces have been on high alert in recent months. If confirmed, the operation marks a significant escalation in India’s counter-insurgency efforts and a clear message to groups operating across the border.
