Officials laud collective effort after Karnal selected among cleanest cities, acknowledge Indore model

A day after Karnal was selected for the prestigious Presidential award under the Swachh Survekshan-2024, Mayor Renu Bala Gupta, MLA Jagmohan Anand and Municipal Commissioner Dr Vaishali Sharma on Sunday credited the collective efforts of all stakeholders for the achievement.

Interacting with the media at the KMC office, they expressed confidence that Karnal’s national ranking will improve significantly this year.

Mayor Gupta said the city had been chosen in the 3 to 10 lakh population category, while the exact ranking was yet to be announced. “It is a proud moment for Karnal residents and civic authorities. The award will be formally conferred by President Droupadi Murmu in a ceremonial event at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, on July 17,” said the Mayor.

She attributed the success to continuous efforts like door-to-door waste collection, segregation of wet and dry garbage and the use of treated sewage water for irrigation in parks, fields and road dividers.

Acknowledged the influence of Indore, which has been adjudged as India’s cleanest city several times, Gupta revealed that the Karnal municipal team had studied the Indore model to improve citizen engagement and sanitation practices.

Gupta said in 2017, Karnal’s national rank was 65 and was first in North India. In 2018, the city’s national rank was 41 and it was first in North India.
