Punjab Cabinet to deliberate on anti-sacrilege Bill today

The draft Bill providing for harsher punishment in sacrilege cases will come up for discussion during the Council of Ministers’ meeting on Monday morning.

Once approved there, the Bill will be tabled in the Assembly. Sources say the draft is proposed as an independent Act of the state government, recommending 10-year punishment in sacrilege cases.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced last week that the draft law would not be enacted immediately. It would be first discussed with all stakeholders. A consultative committee would take the draft to people, religious leaders and institutions and take their point of view.
